Why low light produces grain

A camera sensor works by counting photons. In bright conditions it gets plenty, and the picture is clean. In a dim room it gets very few — so the camera turns up the gain, amplifying the weak signal until the image is bright enough to see.

The problem is that amplification doesn’t distinguish between signal and noise. The sensor’s own tiny electrical fluctuations get amplified just as much as the picture, and those show up as the speckles and shifting grain you see. Push the gain higher and you get more brightness *and* more noise, always together.

Several things make it worse:

  • Small sensors amplify more. Phones and compact cameras have tiny sensors, so they need more gain than a large-sensor camera in the same room — and produce more noise as a result.
  • Compression struggles with noise. Grain changes randomly every frame, which is the hardest possible thing for video compression to handle. So dark scenes get extra blocky and blotchy on top of being noisy.
  • Mixed lighting confuses colour. Candles plus overhead bulbs plus a phone screen means the camera can’t settle on a colour balance, so skin tones drift orange or green.
  • Autofocus hunts in the dark. Low contrast makes focus unreliable, so some footage is genuinely soft as well as noisy.

Enhancement handles noise and detail. A couple of quick adjustments after it, in any free editor, often add more than people expect:
